The Nebraska Personal Finance Challenge is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for high school students to compete with others across the state for cash prizes while demonstrating their budding expertise in financial literacy!
Online Challenge: March 29 – April 19
If you are new to the Nebraska Personal Finance Challenge, welcome! You will need to select “Teacher Registration” from the menu and create your teacher profile. Once your profile is created, you will be able to log in and begin creating your teams.
If you are a returning teacher, welcome back! Your profile information is saved from your previous participation, and you can log in to begin creating your teams for this year’s challenge!
Teams of 3-4 students will have 35 minutes to complete a 30-question online exam covering the principles of personal finance; including money management, credit, investing and insurance. Students earn 10 points for every correct response and 0 points for each incorrect answer. Every question must be answered to move on and students are not able to go back to previous questions.
There will be a cash prize for the top three teams in both the High School and Middle School divisions:
•1st Place: $30 per student
•2nd Place: $20 per student
•3rd Place: $10 per student
The top 5 High School teams from each region will move on to the Nebraska State Finals on April 30!
Nebraska State Finals: April 30
The Nebraska State Finals will be held virtually this year, with live case competitions being hosted via Zoom by each region’s respective Center for Economic Education:
• Western Nebraska: University of Nebraska at Kearney
• Lincoln: University of Nebraska at Lincoln
• Omaha: University of Nebraska at Omaha
The top 5 High School teams from each region will
join their virtual competition on the morning of
April 30 and compete in a live case competition:
• Student teams will receive a fictional financial scenario
and will be given 2 hours to develop their financial recommendations and presentation. Students may use the presentation software of their choice.
• Immediately following their preparation time, teams will have 10 minutes to present their recommendations to a panel of judges, and finally a 5 minute period for judges to respond and ask questions.
Judges from each region will select their competition’s top 3 teams, and each region’s champion will then be placed as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the state overall based on their team’s score in the online challenge.
Every participant at the Nebraska State Finals will receive a limited-edition t-shirt, and the top performing teams will receive trophies and a cash prize for each team member:
Nebraska State Championship
1st: Trophy • $500 per student
2nd: Trophy • $300 per student
3rd: Trophy • $200 per student
Runner Up: Trophy • $100 per student
3rd Place: Trophy • $50 per student
